Tofino or Ucluelet: Which Should You Base In?
Two towns, one coastline, forty minutes apart. Tofino is the busy, buzzy surf capital; Ucluelet is the quieter working town next door. Here is how to decide which one you should actually sleep in.

Ask this question in a travel forum and you will get a small war in the replies. Both towns sit on the same wild edge of Vancouver Island, both flank the beaches of Pacific Rim National Park, and both are wonderful. The difference is character, and the right answer depends entirely on what you want your days to feel like.
Tofino or Ucluelet: the short answer
Base in Tofino if you want the surf scene, the restaurants and the buzz, and you do not mind paying more or sharing the beaches. Base in Ucluelet if you want a quieter, cheaper, more low-key town and do not mind driving a little further to the busiest spots. Both sit the same distance from Long Beach.

That last point trips people up. Because Long Beach and much of Pacific Rim National Park lie between the two towns, neither one has a real edge on the park itself. What differs is everything around it: the energy of the town, the price of a room, and how far you drive to the surf and the tour docks.
How far apart are Tofino and Ucluelet?
Tofino and Ucluelet are about 40 kilometres apart, roughly a 40-minute drive along Highway 4, with Long Beach and the national park sitting between them. They are close enough that you can easily base in one and visit the other on a day trip, so no choice here locks you out of anything.

The two towns share the junction where Highway 4 meets the coast, then run in opposite directions: Tofino north to the end of the peninsula, Ucluelet south. That proximity is worth remembering, because it takes a lot of pressure off the decision. Whichever you pick, the other is a short drive for dinner, a trail, or a change of scene.
Which town is livelier, and which is quieter?
Tofino is the livelier of the two by a wide margin, with a dense cluster of restaurants, cafes, surf shops and galleries, plus the crowds that come with being famous. Ucluelet is a quieter working fishing town with a slower pace, fewer places to eat, and a more local, less touristy feel.

Tofino has built an international name, and in summer it feels it: parking is tight, restaurants book out, and the beaches fill. That energy is a feature if you want a social, buzzy trip. Ucluelet keeps more of its everyday, end-of-the-road character, and its showpiece is the Wild Pacific Trail, a series of cliff-top loops that many visitors rate as the single best coastal walk on this side of the island. If crowds drain you, Ucluelet is the easier place to breathe.
Which one is cheaper?
Ucluelet is generally cheaper than Tofino for accommodation, especially in peak summer, and it often has more availability when Tofino is full. Tofino's fame carries a premium on rooms and dining. For budget-conscious travellers, Ucluelet is usually the smarter base, with the same coastline a short drive away.

Neither town is cheap in high season, this is a remote and popular coast, but the gap is real and grows in July and August. Booking early matters in both. If you are surfing, factor in that lessons and rentals are Tofino-centred, which we cover in our guide to surfing in Tofino, so a Ucluelet base means a short commute to the surf beaches.
Which is better for surfing, beaches and wildlife?
Tofino has the edge for surfing and the surf-beach scene, since Cox Bay, Chesterman and the main surf schools sit on its side. Both towns share Long Beach equally. Most wildlife cruises, including bear watching and Hot Springs Cove, depart from Tofino harbour, while Ucluelet counters with the finest cliff walk on the coast.

If your trip centres on surfing, Tofino is the natural home. If it centres on hiking and quiet, Ucluelet holds its own and then some. For wildlife, Tofino is the launch point: a small-group bear-watching cruise into Clayoquot Sound and the boat-only Hot Springs Cove wildlife cruise both leave from there, so check the live listing for departure times if wildlife is your priority. Storm watching, meanwhile, is spectacular from both, and Ucluelet's headlands are among the best seats on the coast, as we explain in our guide to storm watching on the west coast.

So which should you base in?
Choose Tofino for a first visit built around surfing, dining and wildlife tours, and choose Ucluelet for a quieter, better-value, hike-focused trip. If you have three or more nights, the best answer is often both: a couple of nights in each captures the full character of the coast.
There is no wrong choice here, only a choice that fits your trip. Splitting your stay is the move our team most often suggests to travellers with the time, since it removes the compromise entirely. If you would rather have the beaches, cruises and rainforest days arranged for you from either base, the team behind our guided west coast tours books them as ready-made days, and one easy option from Tofino is a guided ride and hike along the surf beaches.
